Simulation

Fashion 101

There are many kinds of simulations, and I bet you have played a few online or on the computer. Most of the time, they are about math, physics, or other subjects. But did you know that life can also be simulated? What's the difference between a simulation of life and real life? What can we learn from simulating life? Play the following game and find out.

This game is titled Ayiti: The Cost of Life and it comes from Unicef-Voices of Youth. Created by High School students in Global Kids with game developers from GameLab.

The point of this game is to manage a family. However, unlike in the Sims videogames where it’s easy to get a job, make money, buy stuff & make friends, in this game it’s actually HARD to even survive. The challenge of this role playing game is to figure out how you can get your family to survive for four years.

Try it out!

Group Discussion

At the end of the group discussion, please summarize your group's responses and share them on our community blog

  • -If you have played the Sims before, how is this game different?
  • -Does this game seem like a more or less accurate simulation of reality?
  • -How would you change the game, if you were the designer?
  • -Why do you think the game designers chose to force players to choose a particular strategy?
  • -Can you identify three rules and explain how those rules contribute to the outcome of this simulation?
