New Media Literacies, Phase 1

In New Media Literacies Phase 1, we were funded by the MacArthur Foundation. We had five broad goals:

1. Review the general literacy field and produce a white paper that maps the parameters of participatory culture, proposing an integrated new media pedagogy.

2. Create avenues for engagement with teachers and educators.

3. Observe youth engaging digital media and provide them with new media materials, challenges and activities for their review.

4. Collect and create instances of potential curricular materials that encourage constructive uses of new media.

5. Develop partnerships and collaborations.

We achieved these goals and produced a variety of materials, including our white paper, "Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century" and this website. Our other productions included:

Holding community sessions wherein educational faculty, students, colleagues and education leaders - especially at MIT and Harvard - brainstormed ideas for new media curriculum.

Based on our observations of after-school programs, compiling a comprehensive database of after-school media educator "best practices," providing a solid foundational overview of what teachers are doing, the tech they're using and the approaches they're taking.

Producing a Transmedia Storytelling Workshop, a four-hour after-school activity that encourages students to create their own stories and learn the vocab and practices of digital storytelling. This workshop was tested with 13-17 year olds and 11-13 year olds, and was well received.

Creating the New Media Exemplar Library, a series of short documentary segments showing media makers at work discussing their research, production and distribution practices. This library was a direct response to educators' comments that students lack role models for understanding career options in media production.
