New Media Literacies, Professional Development

In 2008 and 2009, we were working under a grant from the MacArthur foundation to create professional development tools for educators.

Our goals were to produce a conference to introduce teachers to the Teachers' Strategy Guide, and to create a Learning Library Training session for after-school professionals, providing a series of resources to help teachers, students and after-school educators deploy NML materials. Essentially, we didn't want NML to fall into the gap between academic research and actual educational practice!

During this phase, we founded our community on Ning.

We worked in many schools, observing the Learning Library and the Teacher Strategy Guide as they were deployed in classrooms.

We also published our findings from this pilot year in a special issue of Threshold magazine, released in Washington DC at the National Education Computing Conference 2009.
